The kitchen ergonomics: basic principles and pitfalls

Gavrilenko

The open closet touches another one near-by, and the refrigerator is too far from the sink – every mistress has her sore claims to the arrangement of the kitchen. Moreover, most often they arise already in everyday life, after the interior design is completed and it seems so perfect. Why does it happen? You were involved on the design and forgot about the ergonomics. If the errors have already done, it is time to correct them.

How does ergonomics work?

Как работает эргономика?Ergonomics – is a plan of a comfortable and safe arrangement of the space. To make the room comfortable, it is worth considering:

  • The most frequent walk ways;
  • The consistency of our daily standing actions;
  • Where it is more convenient for us to store certain items;
  • The physical characteristics of the owners of the kitchen – growth, left-handed or right-handed.

Do you think this is difficult to achieve? – No. In fact, you just need to think carefully and analyze everything, and then properly design your kitchen plan.

Where to look for a dirty trick?

The main pitfall of the ergonomics is the normative data. Let’s take a few basic rules for the size of furniture and its location:

  • The width of the cabinets and pedestals can be from 25 to 80 cm;
  • The depth of the lower cabinets and pedestals: 50-60 cm, height: 85-90 cm;
  • The depth of the upper cabinets: 30-35 cm, height: 45-100 cm;
  • The distance between the upper and lower cabinets: 45-60 cm;
  • The distance between the hood and the cooker: 70-80 cm.

We all try to take into account these recommended norms, but we forget that they are calculated for the medium-sized person and for the kitchen area of 8 m².

What if the growth is higher or lower than the average concept or is your narrow and long kitchen area of only 6 m²? Add or subtract from the data inconvenient for you centimeters. Ergonomics is created to make the space comfortable and safe, so place the cabinets as it is better for you. Then you will not hit your head against the closet, and your back will not hurt because of the low tabletop of the work area.

Five Secrets of the Comfortable Kitchen

  1. Regardless of the area of the kitchen, all working areas should be located within two or three steps of each other, so as not to waste time and energy on moving.
  2. Place the equipment comfortably. For example, in a traditional cooker oven is always located at the bottom. It is uncomfortable, but it is a tradition. Now, when the ovens have become autonomous, it is much more convenient to place them at a height of 80-100 cm from the floor, so that you do not have to bend down. Think about your convenience when you are placing every electrical appliance.
  3. Provide yourself with a large work surface. In practice, it should be no less than a meter long. Therefore, you can cook and cut foods, place dishes in the same space at arm’s end.
  4. Maintain safe distances. The kitchen-range should be located no closer than 45 cm to the window and 40 cm to the sink. The contact of water with the fire or frying pan will lead to the undesirable consequences. The refrigerator should not be placed closer than half a meter from the kitchen-range, so as not to overheat.
  5. Install the washing machine and dishwasher as close to the sink as possible. There is a place where the water supply and drainage systems are concentrated. If the machines stand further and connected to the pipes with the help of hoses, you get a constant overload of the pumps and a rapid wear of the equipment.

There is nothing super complicated in ergonomics. The main thing is to understand how it is comfortable for you. Calculate the formula of your personal convenience. Everything else is a matter of technology.
